2016-2017 1st Blog Post

Complete the following steps.

1.  Go to your blog (or create a blog if you don't have one yet).  Check to make sure your links work.  You may change the title, but you MAY NOT CHANGE THE ADDRESS!  My own blog has an old address but a new title, so I feel your pain.

2.  Create a new blog post.  Give it the title "2016-2017 1st Blog Post."  Set some goals for yourself for this new year.  Set an academic goal, set a personal behavior goal, and set an improvement goal.  Explain why they are all 3 important areas for you to work on this year.

3.  Watch this video on how to leave good comments... I know it's cheesy for you middle school students, but these kids know what they're talking about.  Even if you've watched it before, watch it again!

4.  Go to the lefthand side of my blog in the section called Idleness Prevention Society.  Check out some of the links.  If you see any that don't work, include them in the comment you're going to write to this post.  Note the links that are blocked by the school filter instead of not working at all.  You can check these out at home.  Know any good sites for me to include?  Include them in the comment to this post!

5.  Go to the righthand side of my blog.  Is your blog listed in the correct grade level?  If not, tell me in the comment you're going to leave in step 6.

6.  When you're done with numbers 1-4, comment on this blog post.  Your comment should use the tips given in the video and also a link to your own blog's url.  Show me you learned something, or ask some questions... leave a good comment.  Then you may tweak the settings/backgrounds/fonts on your own blog and/or check out Idleness Prevention Society in detail for the rest of the period.  Get blogging!

  1. I did notice that on the Idleness Prevention Society there they three links that were blocked by the school filter which were, Magnetic Poetry Online, Blockus, and Inspector Parker, but all of the other links did work. Here is also the link to my blog http://diggydude.blogspot.com/ . I did like how you used the same video as the past few years, but it is definitely annoying to watch every year.

    1. If it's annoying, why do you like it? I agree that the delivery is for much younger kids, but the information is still relevant. And I guess when everyone gets good at commenting, we won't have to watch it anymore. ;) Thanks for the information on blocked links!

  2. You might say that we are a little too old for the quality comments video, but I still enjoy watching it. It definitely isn't something I would choose to watch on a rainy day, but it reminds me of when I was those kids' age, and it has good tips. Also, while I was checking the links I noticed that some of the links were blocked by school. The links were: Magnetic Poetry Online, Blokus, and Inspector Parker. This is my link. http://sillywilly400.blogspot.com/

    1. I think you are too old for how the video is presented; I'd definitely agree with that. But, I don't think you're too old for the information. I don't think many kids think about those things at all when they comment. It's good to have a refresher. Thanks for the update on the blocked sites.

  3. As much as we joke about the annual-cheesy-comment-video, I am glad we watch it. It really is a helpful refresher on commenting etiquette and being respectful to our peers' blogs. And a really nice comment can really make someone's day. I wonder if those kids are our age?

    1. I wonder how old they are too! It's good information, even if the delivery is geared toward younger kids. I think most older kids don't do those things, though. What do you think?

  4. I kind of learned to not use more than one exclamation points, but instead use more words. Usually I type in all caps with a bunch of exclamation points. Does it really count when you're just sending it to friends to use proper grammar? Here is the link to my blog http://fishbot123.blogspot.com/

    1. Good question about sending to friends... if you're commenting on a friend's blog for school, always use proper grammar. But, if you're texting or snapchatting just casually, you don't need to worry about it. We use different language for different situations. The trick is knowing when to use which kind. Thanks for the link.

  7. The video is kind of cheesy, but I do learn some from it each time I watch it. The major thing I learned from the video was to only use one exclamation point, even when you're really excited. I never had really thought about that before. I also think that it's good to set goals for yourself each year. It gets me on the right track. 56. It's a weird video that everybody dreads watching, but over all very informative. Though it's made but an elementary school class the tips are very helpful. http://marasblo.blogspot.com/

    1. It's a good reminder to be positive in the comment section. Sometimes people only use it to complain, so I'm glad to have a positive focus. Thanks for including the link to your own blog!

  58. The video was a a good refresher on how to leave a comment. The kids showed some very good information on how to post a very good comment. It is a good video but a bit cheesy. Here is the link to my blog http://hannahssparkleblog.blogspot.com/

  61. Something I learned about the video was to add information. You don't always think to add something new to what someone is writing, but I found that interesting.
